Description: Included among the more than 500 miles of open channels maintained by the Los Angeles County Flood Control District (LACFCD) are more than 45 miles of earthen bottom channels. These channels are under the regulatory oversight of many agencies, specifically; the US Army Corps of Engineers, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. To ensure public safety while minimizing any adverse impacts to the environment, the LACFCD must keep unrestricted flow in the channel. This may involve the removal of sediment, vegetation, debris, and any other obstructions that would reduce the hydraulic capacity of the channel.
